Delivery Point Validation (DPV) |
The process of Delivery Point Validation is similar to address validation using ZIP + 4 encoding, but with greater precision. This option is used in addition to ZIP + 4 Encoding. By using DPV, you can identify addresses that may not be deliverable according to the USPS. Correcting these addresses before mailing can reduce the number of undeliverable pieces.
When you ZIP + 4 encode a list with the DPV option activated, addresses matched to the ZIP + 4 database are also checked against the USPS delivery point file. While ZIP + 4 encoding checks an address record against a range of addresses, DPV checks against specific delivery points: e.g., “77 Josons Dr, Rochester NY 14623” is matched to a range of addresses in the ZIP + 4 database (75-99 Josons Dr) and given a return code of 31 (an exact match). But when this address is processed through DPV, it is not validated because there is no physical delivery point at 77 Josons Dr. This specific delivery point information is only available through DPV.
Additionally, DPV may be able to match addresses given a return code of 22 (Multiple Response) when processed through ZIP + 4 encoding. For example, an address missing a directional, such as 123 Main St (instead of 123 E Main St), may be matched to a specific delivery point using DPV.
